about

Diving Board tells the story of me being on holiday in Menorca. There was a small cove where people would relax around and take turns diving from an obvious, protruding rock. All was well until a group of "pumping iron", gorgeous, Americans turned up. I looked down at my pale, hairy belly and felt quite insecure.

The music for this track was written by our guitarist Tom. In typical fashion, the solo had not been written until the night before the recording. So "that" solo that everybody loves, the first time we were hearing it was when Tom walked into the studio that day with a shit-eating grin on his face.

lyrics

come down and join our competition
a row of divers by the sea
real shame im representing britain
what an unfortunate scene

pale skin and thicker in the middle
think im getting quite shy
out they come, oh fitter than a fiddle
is that hercules I spy?

on a natural diving board
water clearer than the sky
i see their bodies in the afternoon sun
but they also see mine

so I jump and crash into the water
seemed the only place to hide
fish me out and put me to the slaughter
whale my envious hide

look here come the americans
don't they glimmer as they shine
I see their bodies in the afternoon sun
as I cover up mine

can I appreciate my body
through a critical lense
oh of course you'll hear from anybody
but it's only just pretend
