about

Menin Gate journals a sixth form trip to Belgium that I took with my Music Production class (a class that I didn't perform well in as I'm now a chemist). In it, we were under the impression that we were allowed to go on the trip so long as we sang a few hymns at a ceremony...nothing too difficult. Unfortunately, the actually ceremony was for remembrance day under the WW1 war memorial...Menin Gate. We were unprepared and embarrassed. The song switches tone as it references a relationship I was in at the time where I was quite miserable. This put more of a stain on the trip than potentially insulting our greatest generation with a flat rendition of "nearer my god to thee"

lyrics

Standing in the menin gate
under names of fallen heroes
the choir should have practiced
by this stage
one more hymn then we can go

down in the tunnel
it was hard to pass the time
embarrassing myself on adolescent rhymes
sat on an old coach
with the memphis seats
i hear the next stop is the coast

so we played out in the rain
just a band of english students
the singer bellowed guten tag, bonjour
the silence deafening me still

oh the vibrations,
the tether in my pocket
i was tempted to wait the weekend and say i lost it
oh but to think
that i could enjoy just one day
well i was ever the optimist

and i was never off my phone
so my memory is skewed
im sure there was a bandstand
where we played fleetwood mac
wish i'd taken in that view

so we walked around in Bruges
hearing all about the movie
once again you call me paranoid
i'd hoped you'd called to say you're leaving
